Lisa Occhipinti

Beyond Books: Text, color + assemblage
Venice, California

September 22 - 27, 2011

Cast a new light on old books in this three-day fine art workshop set in Venice, California with Lisa Occhipinti. Learn to deconstruct worn, orphaned books and elevate them into timeless art objects as well as expand your notions of merging concept with materials.

Lisa will teach you that by taking prompts from the book you are using (title, subject, chapter title, passage, illustration) you will transform it into a piece of art that both contains and reveals. You will also learn that with paint, collage and assemblage you will turn a book into a memoir.

In this workshop in sunny California learn to upcycle a book into a journal to record your experiences.

Lisa Occhipinti is a mixed media painter, book artist and author. Her work is in private and corporate collections worldwide. She is the author of "The Repurposed Library", a book of 33 book-art projects, published by STC/Abrams. Her work is also in "Papercraft".

She lives and works in Venice, CA. Words, text and the notion of endless possibilities are the inspiration behind her book works. She is fascinated by the idea of how books connect people, places and time, not just the author-reader relationship but the history of the book itself: who has owned it, who borrowed it, where has it traveled to.

This workshop includes:

  • 3 day workshop with Lisa Occhipinti - including demonstrations, group discussions and one-on-one critique
  • 4 nights at Hotel Erwin, Venice Beach, California - rooms are shared/double occupancy
  • 4 days breakfast
  • Final night cocktail party
  • Educational gallery walks
  • A chance to experience the entertaining culture of Venice Beach

You will be sent a list of supplies to bring upon registration.

Workshop is limited to 10 people.

Fee: $1449.00 - airfare is not included. Deposit: $724.50 - due when place in workshop is confirmed.
Final Payment of $724.50 due on August 10, 2011
